The Hitori playbook

Read the aim of Hitori, then make your first move. Shade repeated numbers while keeping black cells separated and all white cells connected. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Play twelve 5×5 puzzles. Any shaded starting cells remain fixed.

Something to practise

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Keep the objective visible.

  3. Black cells cannot share an edge.
  4. Check puzzle verifies duplicates and connectivity.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use one clear input at a time.

A closer look at one example

Two identical unshaded numbers in one row cannot both remain. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Take a moment to compare.

Where a round can go wrong

Removing every duplicate can disconnect white cells. Check the rule before repeating the action. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
